Manager, Publishing
Rob oversees operation of the Publishing unit with direct responsibility for the editors and typesetters. He organises the production and distribution of seven national research journals published by the Society. Rob is also responsible for the production and editing of many non-journal publications and newsletters, including the Royal Society Miscellaneous and Bulletin Series, and other books. He is Scientific Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics .
Scientific Editor
Sandra has full responsibility for scientific and technical editing the New Zealand Journal of Crop and Horticultural Science and is the Scientific Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research .

Scientific Editor
Carolyn is Scientific Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Zoology . She is a former long-serving editor of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand and is actively involved in research on mammals.

Scientific Editor
David is Scientific Editor of the New Zealand Journal of Agricultural Research. He has research experience in weed science and soil physics, science writing and editing for agriculture and horticulture, as well as tutoring in science writing.

Production Editor
Liz is Production Editor for four of the Royal Society's research journals. Her duties involve mainly technical editing and proofreading of manuscripts from acceptance through to final publication. She consults regularly with the Scientific Editors, typesetters, and printers.

Typesetter and Graphic Designer
Robert is responsible for the preparation and layout of text, figures and covers of publications produced by the Publishing unit. He typesets manuscripts, prepares the illustrations (scanning or electronic), and produces and corrects proofs for up to four of the Royal Society's science journals. Robert also typesets the Annual Report, the Marsden Fund Update newsletter, pamphlets, other Royal Society publications, and educational material such as the Alpha and Gamma series, Science Teacher magazine, and the Teacher Fellow Profiles book. He liaises with the editors, authors and printers, and provides
page layout advice to staff.
Eddie DavisContracts Manager, International
Eddie manages various funds that form part of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology’s International Science and Technology (ISAT) Linkages Fund. The purpose of which is to ensure that New Zealand science and technology activities achieve full integration with the best international research and development effort. In addition, he provides executive assistance to two Royal Society Committees.

Bruce Jones Chief Financial Officer
Bruce has overall responsibility for the functions of Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology. He ensures that the management team receives appropriate financial information on a timely basis so that a financially sound Society is maintained. Bruce’s Human Resource responsibilities include payroll, personnel record management, recruitment and employment documentation in a manner consistent with being a good employer. He also maintains an overview of the Society’s IT strategy to ensure that equipment and plans are keeping abreast of new technologies.
Owen WatsonIT Administrator
Much of Owen's time is devoted to network administration and staff IT support which includes answering a stream of questions and dealing with crises on the spot. Other responsibilities include maintaining the Royal Society's large website and programming/updating the databases, data backup and archives.

Marilyn MathesonAdministration Assistant
Marilyn prepares the Daily News and updating the events calendar for the RSNZ website. She also updates the database for TENZ, affiliated societies and members. From time to time she provides secretarial and administration assistance as required in the main office and for the IT Administrator.
Lance manages the day-to-day running of Science House. He makes sure all rooms are ready for scheduled meetings, setting out refreshments as required and dealing with caterer deliveries.

Rebecca Goffin Environmental Education Officer
Becks co-ordinates the Environmental Monitoring and Action Project (EMAP), which includes the combined delivery of the National Waterways Project and GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) throughout New Zealand's primary, intermediate and secondary schools.

Specialist: Education Outreach
Jessie promotes, encourages and supports research and technological practice to students and educators by communicating RSNZ education activities to educators, students of all ages, external organisations and parents.
Jessie manages CREST, and the Alpha and Gamma series. She also works with NZ Sciences, Mathematics and
Technology Teacher Fellows and supports the Social Sciences Advisory Committee.

Gill is responsible for administration of the New Zealand, Science, Mathematics & Technology Teacher Fellowship Scheme and the Ministry of Education Quality Teaching Partnership Fund.
Debbie WoodhallSpecialist: Education Programmes
Debbie Woodhall manages Realise the Dream which celebrates and recognises outstanding research and technological practice by school students. Debbie oversees the running of the BP Challenge, a hands-on learning programme which involves thousands of school students each year. She interacts with the many students on the Royal Society of NZ Young Achievers database and is the administrator of the Talented School Students Travel Award and the various scholarships offered to students to visit international science schools and forums.

Matt assists the administration of several funds and publications, including the Alpha and Gamma series, CREST, Young Achievers – Including Science Schools, Realise the Dream, BAYERBoost and BP Challenge.
Manager, Corporate Services
Gill supports the Chief Executive and Royal Society Council where appropriate, as and when required. She supports the Academy with its core business; administers, manages, allocate funding for and promotes James Cook Research Fellowships; NZ S&T Medals; Rutherford Medal; Pickering Medal; S&T Travel Grants; and various Academy medals and awards. Gill is also responsible for overseeing and supporting Royal Society Membership i.e. Branches, Constituent Organisations and individual Members.
Judy LyonsAdministration Officer
Judy assists Gill with the administration for the Royal Society’s Academy, where required. She also helps administer the award of Medals and Prizes, Travel Grants and the James Cook Research Fellowship.
Glenda LewisManager, Communications
Glenda manages the Royal Society’s communications, including a number of annual programmes and events: Freemason’s BIG Science Adventures, Speaker’s Science Forum, Royal Society Distinguished Speaker Series; Science Honours Dinner; Manhire Prize for Creative Science Writing, Humanities Award, and the VIP Science Class.

Science Writer and Editor
Anna writes and edits a variety of Royal Society publications, including the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Marsden Update, Alert, Alphas, press releases and content for the Science Media Centre.
Don SmithGeneral Manager, Business Development
The Business Development Unit undertakes activities for the Society’s external clients. These include Research Funding (the Marsden Fund and other smaller funds), Publishing and International Contracts. Don is responsible for these operational teams and for generating new revenue for the Society. He is also the Executive Officer for the New Zealand Synchrotron Group Ltd which is a company formed by NZ’s universities and CRIs to manage their investment in the Australian Synchrotron.
Dean PetersonManager, Research Funding
Dean manages a portfolio of research funds including: the Marsden Fund; the Cross Departmental Research Pool (CDRP); and the Strategic Relocation Fund. The Marsden Fund supports research excellence in science, technology, engineering and maths, social sciences and the humanities. The research supported by the Marsden Fund is not subject to government’s socio-economic priorities, but is investigator initiated. The CDRP aims to increase departmental capability to meet the policy advice needs of Ministers, through supporting multi-departmental research projects. The Strategic Relocation Fund assists world-leading researchers, working in key areas of strategic interest to New Zealand, in relocating to New Zealand and establishing a research team.
Peter Gilberd Deputy Manager, Research Funding
Peter assesses current Marsden contracts, processes research reports and makes monitoring visits to researchers. He administers current contracts and contributes to other activities including database development and publicity.
Rachel AverillSenior Research Assessor
Rachel assesses current Marsden contracts, which includes processing research reports and making monitoring visits to researchers. She also contributes to other activities within the Fund.
Tasha BlackResearch Assessor
Tasha assesses current Marsden contracts, which includes processing research reports and making monitoring visits to researchers. She also contributes to general administration of the Marsden Fund.
Rochelle BartonAdministration Officer
Rochelle carries out much of the administration of the Marsden Fund, including processing of applications, and fielding of enquiries. She also draws up the contracts, liaises with university and CRI research coordinators, and provides secretarial services for the Marsden Fund Council.
Janet SorensenAdministration Officer (Part-time)
Janet carries out much of the administration of the CoRE Fund and assists with the administration of the Marsden Fund. She also provides support services for the Marsden Fund Council and the Assessment Panels.
Manager, External Affairs
The Policy Unit at the Society now encompasses a broader range of activities in line with the strategic plan. Joe has overall responsibility for the unit and its deliverables including: developing further the Society’s international portfolio of activities; working to enhance the Society’s voice in national and international policy development; building relationships with key players in the science sector including government, business and researchers and; manage and develop the evaluation function of the Society.

Evaluation Officer
Jason joined the Royal Society as Research Assessor in 2001, before taking appointment as the Society’s Evaluation Officer. He has an academic background in biochemistry and oncology research.
At the Society, Jason is responsible for ensuring that monitoring and evaluation activities are conducted in a fashion satisfactory to the Fund’s providers and Royal Society management.

Policy Analyst
Jez is part of the policy unit, with general responsibilities
for policy and a watching brief on the physical sciences
and economics. He is concerned with the overall state of the science system in New Zealand and specifically with the interface between science and industry. He spent much of 2008 on secondment to MAF, helping to develop the New Zealand Fast Forward initiative.
He originally worked as a materials scientist, in Teeside, Cambridge and Tsukuba, specialising in joining (welding, brazing and bonding) in high-performance structures.
