Royal Society of New Zealand Science Funding
New Zealand has world-class expertise and a great track record in science and technology. While our research and development output is comparatively modest in a global context, New Zealand’s researchers are nevertheless well connected with international research efforts.
New Zealand has a great deal to gain through international scientific collaborations. On behalf of the Ministry of Research, Science & Technology the Royal Society actively supports collaborative links with a number of countries by way of bilateral science arrangements, other government initiatives, and funding mechanisms.

for senior secondary school and undergraduate tertiary students to get experience in environmental research or restoration

financial support for preparing or printing geological maps or other scientific illustrations accompanying papers accepted for the Society's publications.

East Asia and Pacific Summer Program for US graduate students to be hosted by NZ research institutions for eight weeks
- European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)
provides for up to ten travel grants for New Zealand researchers to travel to Europe.

for the encouragement of research in New Zealand zoology, botany and geology
- IGAC Young Scientist Travel Awards
International Global Atmospheric Chemistry Project designed to fund young New Zealand scientist' trip to IGAC conferences
- International Science & Technology Linkages Fund
facilitates bilateral research through the provision of funding for joint research between New Zealand and the world except for Germany and Spain
- International Science & Technology Linkages Fund for Germany
facilitates bilateral research through the provision of funding for New Zealand researchers to travel to Germany, or to host German researchers, to work on joint research projects
- International Science & Technology Linkages Fund for Spain
facilitates bilateral research through the provision of funding for New Zealand researchers to travel to Spain, or to host Spanish researchers, to work on joint research projects
- James Cook Research Fellowships
awarded to "forward thinking" researchers who will make a significant contribution to New Zealand’s knowledge base.
- James G Hay Travel Award
The award is to assist New Zealand university staff or post-graduate students in biomechanics to present a paper at each biennial ISB Congress.
- New Zealand/Japan Joint Bilateral Programme (NZ/JSPS)
The NZ-JSPS bilateral programmes support (1) Postdoctoral Fellowships; (2) Exchange of visits of NZ and Japanese Scientists between the two countries; and (3) the holding of joint Workshops either in NZ or in Japan
- Julius von Haast Fellowship Award
allows internationally recognized German researchers to spend time working collaboratively with their New Zealand colleagues, and to establish, or enhance collaborative research of benefit to both countries
- Mappin Fund
research grants for botanical investigations
- Marsden Fund
supports research excellence in science, technology, engineering and maths, social sciences and the humanities
- New Zealand-China
A Mathematics, Evolution, and Development Conference is to be held in Shanghai, China during 21-28 March 2010 and New Zealand researchers and emerging researchers with relevant experience are invited to submit an expression of interest.
- New Zealand Ecohydraulics Trust Travel Award
The award is to allow a young NZ scientist to attend International Symposia on Ecohydraulics
- Quality Teaching Partnership Fund
the Ministry of Education's support of conferences/wananga to be held in New Zealand during the period 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009

an opportunity for secondary students to take part in research projects, participate in forums and visit international science fairs
- Skinner Fund
financial support for the study of the history, art, culture, physical and social anthropology of the Maori and other Polynesian peoples
- Talented School Students Travel Award
support for school students to participate in nationally recognised science and technology events outside New Zealand
- Travel Awards
for Phd students to attend their first overseas scientific conference (this includes summer school or workshops)
