Abstract This species has been previously considered endemic to the New Zealand region. In 1973 a collection of Hypolepis made on King Island (Bass Strait, Tasmania) was forwarded to me by Mr P. F. Barnett for identification. The collection was of Hypolepis distans Hook. Mr Barnett (pers. comm., 9.12.1974) states that H. distans occurs in several scattered localities in the north-east of King Island.
