(Received 13 February 1976)

Abstract Sieve elements, very similar by their position and general characteristics to those in the sporophytes, occur in the vascular prothalli of Psilotum from Rangitoto Island, New Zealand. This makes the gametophytic strands, when in their most highly developed form, an exact counterpart of those in the sporophytes.
