Botany Division, DSIR, Private Bag, Christchurch, New Zealand

Abstract Although the name Raoul is familiar to botanists it is not generally known that two members of the Raoul family contributed to our knowledge of New Zealand botany or that Raoul I. was named in honour of yet another. Etienne Fiacre Louis Raoul (1815-52) surgeon attached to the French corvettes L'Aube and L'Allier while in New Zealand waters from July 1840 to November 1841 collected plant specimens from the Bay of Islands and Akaroa.
