Abstract Carpel vasculature in more than 80 follicle and achene bearing species is considered and it is concluded that these 2 basic gynoecial types may not be as closely related as is often supposed. Achenes are from unilacunar nodes, follicles from trilacunar and no intermediate types have been identified.

Keywords achene; follicle; carpel vasculature; floral biology
