Abstract Pohlia australis, a new gemmiferous species, is described from the South Island, New Zealand. Pohlia tenuifolia, formerly thought to be endemic to Australasia, is reported from two local- ities in South America (Chile and Brazil).

Keywords Pohlia australis; P. ochii; P. camp- totrachela; P. tenuifolia; Mielichhoferia brachy- carpa; Bryaceae; gemmae; phytogeography
