Abstract Until 1920 the systematics of New Zealand fungi largely involved the study by over- seas experts of collections sent to them by local or visiting botanists. Subsequently, G. H. Cunningham and other mycologists working within New Zealand have contributed much to the knowledge of locally occurring fungi. Possible future lines of investi- gation are suggested.
