Abstract A number of varietal names and new combinations for grasses were cited with the authority Hack. MS., in the first edition of Cheese- man's "Manual of the New Zealand Flora" (1906). There has been some uncertainty whether these names should be attributed to Hackel or to Cheese- man. A comparison of diagnostic descriptions in Hackel's letters to Cheeseman, held at the Auck- land Institute and Museum Library, with descrip- tions in Cheeseman's Manual, confirmed that all names should be attributed to Hackel.
