Abstract In a taxonomic revision of the New
Zealand species of the genus Gracilaria (Rhodo-
phyta, Gigartinales) three species are recognised:-
G. secundata Harvey, G. sordida sp. nov., and G.
truncata Kraft. A further species, at present of
uncertain position, is discussed, and excluded
names and records are listed. G. secundata, origi-
nally described from New South Wales, Australia,
occurs in the southern North Island, South, Stew-
art, Chatham, and Auckland Islands; G. sordida sp.
nov. and G. truncata appear to be endemic to New
Zealand and occur throughout the North, South and
Stewart Islands, with G. sordida sp. nov. also
