Abstract The status of Fucus cirrhosus , described from Dusky Sound, New Zealand, is clarified. Type material in BM has been examined and shown to be identical to the red alga currently known as Plocamium costatum and not a taxonomic synonym of the South African-based P . corallorhiza . Plocamium cirrhosum comb. nov. is proposed as the correct name for this alga occurring in New Zealand and Australia.
