Abstract A new rust fungus, Puccinia embergeriae sp. nov., on Embergeria grandifolia (Sonchus grandifolia) from the Chatham Islands, New Zealand, is described. It is compared with other rust fungi known on Sonchus spp. A recent upsurge of Miyagia pseudosphaeria on Sonchus spp. in New Zealand is discussed, and attributed to the possible introduction of a new pathogenic race of the rust.
