VERTICAL STRUCTURE IN THE MID-TASMAN CONVERGENCE ZONE

B. R. Stanton

New Zealand Oceanographic Institute, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington.

Abstract Hydrological data from the New Zealand to Norfolk Island region in August and September 1972 showed a weakly developed Mid-Tasman Convergence. Vertical sections through this front show it slopes under the warm water side of the front and is confined to the upper 200 m layer. The Mid-Tasman Convergence appears to be marked at the surface by the 35.5-35.6%o isohalines, but surface temperatures at the front vary considerably from year to year. In August - September 1972, sea surface temperatures in this region were lower than average.
