Abstract This special section is dedicated to Dr Robert Montgomery McDowall (or just plain “Bob”), who retired from the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research Ltd (NIWA) on 31 March 2000 after an extremely productive and influential career spanning 40 years researching the taxonomy and ecology of New Zealand freshwater fishes. The following papers were some of those presented at Bob’s retirement seminar held at Christchurch on 20 November 2000. The diversity of these papers reflects something of the diversity of interests in New Zealand’s freshwater fish that Bob maintained throughout his career. When discussing Bob’s research career, it is inappropriate to refer to it in the past tense, as in his so-called retirement, Bob is as active as ever.
