1. 2013 Distinguished Speaker tour underway

The 2013 Royal Society of New Zealand Distinguished Speaker tour with Professor Terry Speed is underway.

Article: Letting the gene out of the bottle

Up and coming maths and science whizzes, epigenetics needs you, says Terry Speed.

“One of the reasons I talk about this,” the Australian statistics professor told an audience last night at Auckland Museum, “is that I want to bring more mathematical scientists into the picture. If you could tell your children, or your relatives, or the people you teach, that this is a hot area. And tell them, something that I tell them a lot, if you get in early, you can capture the low-hanging fruit. Whereas if you come late, you’ve got a lot of competition.”

But exactly what is epigenetics? Speed, who works alongside epigeneticists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, asked the audience and got three answers along similar lines. An approximate definition is that epigenetics is the difference between the genotype – one’s genetic blueprint – and their phenotype – the cell or body one ends up with. It is the study of gene changes that happen as a result of processes outside the DNA sequence.

Media release: Codes and ciphers: unravelling the mathematics of the internet

The important role mathematics plays in safely and accurately transmitting information across the internet will be the focus of a public talk in Rotorua next week, being given by Dr Dillon Mayhew, a mathematician from Victoria University.

Dr Mayhew’s talk ‘Codes and ciphers – the mathematics of the internet’ will explore how the modern world has been transformed by the ability to send and receive information instantaneously across the globe.

He will be discussing, in a non-technical way, some of the mathematical principles involved in encrypting confidential information including the role of prime numbers, and the concept of public key cryptography.

“Our world has been completely changed by the ability to send and receive information immediately from almost anywhere on our planet,” says Dr Mayhew.

“The use of codes and ciphers is an important way of making sure that confidential, or secret, information transferred across the internet stays that way.

“We use these in everyday online transactions, such as with banks and companies like Amazon, but they are also used by governments for transferring high-level secret information and, for these situations, more complex codes are required.

“For this to occur, however, a trade-off often has to be made and I’ll be speaking about this balance between efficiency and security in my talk,” he says.

Presented and produced by Alison Ballance, Ruth Beran and Veronika Meduna

‘Expedition to the Three Kings Islands’

The Three Kings Islands lie just 55 kilometres north of Cape Reinga, but as a team of marine biologists discover during a two-week expedition these storm-battered islands are a world of their own. Alison Ballance joins the Three Kings Islands Marine Expedition as experts from Auckland Museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, NIWA, and the Universities of Auckland and Queensland sample the seaweeds, fishes and invertebrates that manage to make these wave-washed shores their home. The discoveries include new records of fish for the island group, an unusual stalked jellyfish and numerous types of seaweed, many of them rare and undescribed.

And – developmental stuttering affects one child in 20 and for many the problem persists into adulthood. There is no cure or even permanent treatment, largely because the cause of stuttering remains unclear. It was long thought that stuttering is a psychological problem, but Catherine Theys at the University of Canterbury tells Veronika Meduna that brain imaging techniques suggest that stuttering is associated with differences in brain function.

Two science and environment stories air during the week on Afternoons with Jim Mora at 3:35 pm, Monday and Thursday. The complete programme is repeated at 1:10 am on Sunday mornings.

1. 2013 Distinguished Speaker tour starts next week

The 2013 Royal Society of New Zealand Distinguished Speaker is Professor Terry Speed.

Scientists have now mapped the human genome. The next frontier is understanding human epigenomes: the ‘instructions’ which tell the DNA whether to make skin cells or blood cells or other body parts. Apart from a few exceptions, the DNA sequence of an organism is the same whatever cell is considered. So why are the blood, nerve, skin and muscle cells so different and what mechanism is employed to create this difference? The answer lies in epigenetics. If we compare the genome sequence to text, the epigenome is the punctuation and shows how the DNA should be read.

Australian Professor Terry Speed is a world leader in bioinformatics. His work has enabled scientists to assess which genes are being turned on in a cell and to what extent. This has helped to identify areas of the human genome that contribute to cancer, genes that are vital for embryonic development and to pinpoint malaria proteins responsible for initiating infection in human red blood cells.

Our modern world has been completely transformed by the instantaneous movement of information around the globe – the information transmitted over the internet in 24 hours would fill 2,000,000 tons of CDs. How can we transmit such volumes of information accurately and securely? The answer lies in the mathematics of codes and ciphers. This talk will be a non-technical explanation of some of these mathematical ideas.

Dillon Mayhew studied maths and music at Victoria University of Wellington before leaving to pursue doctoral studies at Oxford University. He returned to Wellington in 2006. His research concerns objects called matroids: essentially this means doing geometry, but from a computer’s point of view.

The subject is ‘New Zealand Aquaculture Research’ and it will be guest edited by Andrea C. Alfaro (Auckland University of Technology), Nick King (Cawthron Institute) and Andrew Jeffs (University of Auckland).

This themed issue will address topics relevant to New Zealand aquaculture, including selective breeding, broodstock conditioning and reproduction, larval development, stock growth, nutrition and health, and product quality.

We are calling for submissions by 2 December 2013 through the journal’s manuscript management site. Earlier submission of manuscripts is encouraged. Manuscript length should ideally be in the range of 5,000-10,000 words. Note that submission does not guarantee acceptance for publication, which will depend on the outcome of normal peer review processes and authors meeting critical time schedules.

Forum: ‘Biosecurity in New Zealand’, 11 July, Auckland

New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science is holding a full day forum entitled ‘Biosecurity in New Zealand – have we gone soft at the border’ on Thursday 11 July 2013 in the Owen Glenn Building, University of Auckland.

Biosecurity is vital to New Zealand. There have been at least three major biosecurity breaches in New Zealand in the last decade or so:

the Painted Apple Moth in Auckland in 1999;

the Varroa mite was thought to have become established in New Zealand due to a queen bee being smuggled into the country;

the plant pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa) affecting kiwifruit.

Preservation of our natural ecosystems, the future growth of our economy and our major primary biological exports are all threatened by ongoing incursions at our borders. Yet we also recognise the importance of tourism and without the ability to trade then the agriculture and horticulture industries don’t function. Being part of the global economy means we are part of the global ecosystem, for better or worse.

Presented and produced by Alison Ballance, Ruth Beran and Veronika Meduna

The latest Global Burden of Disease Study identified tobacco smoking, including second-hand smoke, as the second highest risk factor for disease world-wide. Alison Ballance meets one of the study’s authors, Nick Wilson from the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington, to find out why tobacco smoke is a major public health issue. She also heads to central Wellington to meet research fellow Amber Pearson, who is measuring levels of fine particulate matter both inside restaurants and in their outdoor smoking areas.

Smoking has also been the focus recently for fifteen medical students from the University of Otago, Wellington who took to the streets to measure how many people are smoking outside bars. Ruth Beran meets Chris Kenny and Alex Kao who explain how their research could lead to leased pavement areas becoming ‘smoke-free’.

The New Zealand Association of Scientists focused its recent conference on the value of science. We’ve invited NZAS president, Victoria University physicist Shaun Hendy, climate scientist James Renwick and poet Helen Heath to discuss the contributions science makes to our economy and culture.

New Zealand Birds Online is a new free website (nzbirdsonline.org.nz), and with more than 400,000 words, 6500 photos and hundreds of sound files it’s the ultimate guide to New Zealand birds for both complete amateurs and professional bird watchers. Alison Ballance heads to Te Papa to talk with editor-in-chief Colin Miskelly about this massive three-year volunteer effort.

Two science and environment stories air during the week on Afternoons with Jim Mora at 3:35 pm, Monday and Thursday. The complete programme is repeated at 1:10 am on Sunday mornings.

Scientists have mapped the human genome but the next challenge is understanding human epigenomes. New Zealanders in different parts of the country will soon get…

Scientists have mapped the human genome but the next challenge is understanding human epigenomes.

New Zealanders in different parts of the country will soon get to hear about this new frontier from one of Australia’s best statisticians, Professor Terry Speed.

Why do we have blood, nerve, skin and muscle cells when the DNA or genetic information for those cells is largely identical? The answer lies in our epigenomes.

“These are best described as the reading instructions,” says Professor Speed. “If we compare the genome sequence to text, the epigenome is the punctuation which shows how the DNA should be read to create these different types of cells.”

A world leader in bioinformatics, Professor Speed says work understanding epigenomes can now go ahead more rapidly because of the advances in DNA sequencing.

“If we think of the single reference human genome, there will be literally hundreds of reference epigenomes. This means we need high-throughput techniques to study epigenomes and now with second-generation DNA sequencing techniques, we have that.”

Even so, Professor Speed says that epigenome analysis will likely occupy biologists, bio-informaticians and biostatisticians like himself for some time to come.

Professor Terry Speed is visiting the country as the 2013 Royal Society of New Zealand Distinguished Speaker. He will speak in Auckland, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington from June 11 to 20.

In his talk, Professor Speed will introduce the topic of epigenomes, outline the data becoming available, summarise some of the progress made so far and point to some of the probability and statistical challenges.

To date in his career, Professor Speed’s work has enabled scientists to assess which genes are being turned on in a cell and to what extent. This has helped to identify areas of the human genome that contribute to cancer, genes that are vital for embryonic development and to pinpoint malaria proteins responsible for initiating infection in human red blood cells.

He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian equivalent of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and was awarded the NHMRC Achievement Award for Excellence in Health and Medical Research in 2007 and an Australia Fellowship in 2009. Most recently he was presented with the 2012 Thomson Reuter’s Citation Award and the 2012 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in the Life Sciences.

Dr Di McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand, says it is a real honour to host such an exceptional statistician.

“Through our annual Distinguished Speaker lecture series, we hope to give New Zealanders an opportunity to hear first-hand from some influential international mathematicians, scientists and scholars.

“We hope this will allow those who attend our lectures the opportunity to understand better the world around them and to be excited by the new frontiers being uncovered by research.”

Professor Speed’s lectures are free and open to the public. Bookings are recommended and can be made at www.royalsociety.org.nz/frontier.

Professor Buchanan will describe new advances in post-tensioned multi-storey timber buildings developed at the University of Canterbury, and will discuss how recent research at Canterbury and elsewhere has contributed to increased awareness of timber as a low-damage sustainable material for major structures.

He will also show how acceptance of new building materials in the market place requires a high level of confidence among a large number of players, from designers and contractors to building owners and regulators.

Dr Andy Buchanan is Professor of Timber Design at the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand. He is a structural engineer with special interests in timber engineering, fire safety and earthquake engineering.

Details: 7.30pm Wednesday 12 June, C3 Lecture Theatre, University of Canterbury.

Cafe scientifique: ‘Getting on with it – the effects of genetic testing’, 27 June, Lower Hutt

Genetic testing for familial breast and ovarian cancer has had recent media exposure following the announcement by Angelina Jolie that she carries a BRCA1 gene mutation. In New Zealand, families can request a risk assessment through Genetic Health Services NZ. The assessment involves collection of a detailed family cancer history. Genetic testing to look for a mutation in genes associated with hereditary cancer may be offered to families assessed as high risk and who meet certain criteria.

Research with New Zealand women who are living with an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer found that women’s decisions regarding genetic testing and risk-reducing surgery are influenced by their family responsibilities. “Getting on with it” emerged as a dominant theme in this research, describing the way in which many of the women approached living with the increased cancer risk.

Alison McEwen PhD, FHGSA is a genetic counsellor working for Genetic Health Service NZ in Wellington.

Our Changing World, Thursday 9.00 pm, Radio New Zealand National 101FM

Presented and produced by Alison Ballance, Ruth Beran and Veronika Meduna

This month, the concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached 400ppm for the first time in human history. Tim Naish, the director of Victoria University’s Antarctic Research Centre, describes what the world looked like last time this happened, some three million years ago, and what that means for the future.

Generation Zero is a youth organisation with the aim of moving New Zealand beyond fossil fuels to a zero-carbon economy. Founding member Louis Chambers and Stephanie Gregor tell Veronika Meduna why they consider climate change as the biggest challenge for their generation and how they plan to tackle it.

Veronika Meduna also meets climate scientists ahead of a two-day conference next week where they’ll discuss the latest findings on impacts, vulnerability and mitigation options in New Zealand and the Pacific region.

The Wildlife Ecology Group at Landcare Research is trialling potential new possum lures to improve trapping success, and Samantha Brown shows Alison Ballance how they are field testing the attractiveness of urine produced by female possums in oestrus.

Martin Kennedy from the University of Otago, Christchurch is interested in understanding how particular combinations of genes cause different diseases and also determine how individuals react to drugs, a research area known as pharmacogenomics. He tells Alison Ballance why he believes genetics will start to play an increasingly important role in the treatment of diseases.

Two science and environment stories air during the week on Afternoons with Jim Mora at 3:35 pm, Monday and Thursday. The complete programme is repeated at 1:10 am on Sunday mornings.
