Individual Membership

Individual membership – by application

Standard member: Any person who is able and willing to subscribe to the object of the Society can become a member. Members need not be actively working (or have worked) in science, technology or humanities.

Professional member: Members who apply and have their professional qualifications recognised by Council are called Professional members, and have the title MRSNZ. The minimum requirements for Professional membership are described in section 2.2 of the Royal Society of New Zealand Rules.

Student member: We offer a special reduced membership rate for full-time students (resident in New Zealand).

Retired member: We offer a reduced (halved) membership rate for retired members and those not in paid work.

Life member: Life membership is available to members who wish to pay in a lump sum. Please contact us for details.

Individual membership – by nomination and selection only

Companion: The Society may confer the title of Companion on any person who, in the Council’s opinion, has achieved a high level of eminence in the promotion or encouragement of science, technology or humanities. Companions have the title CRSNZ and are nominated by a member of the Society. Read more about Companions and the selection process.

Fellow: Fellowship of the Royal Society of New Zealand (FRSNZ) is an honour conferred for distinction in research or the advancement of science, technology or humanities. The Academy may elect as a Fellow any person who in their opinion has achieved distinction in research or the advancement of science, technology or humanities. Fellows have the title FRSNZ. Honorary Fellow: The Council may from time to time admit as an Honorary Fellow any person who is not normally resident in New Zealand, and who, in their opinion, has rendered eminent service to science, technology or humanities.

Honorary member: The Council may grant Honorary Membership to an Ordinary Member who, in the Council’s opinion, has rendered eminent service to science, technology, humanities, or the Society.
