Biographical Information

Professor John Smillie, Faculty of Law, University of Otago, has a long-standing reputation as a critical scholar who has challenged the basis of civil law obligations. His 1996 article on civil adjudication in the New Zealand Law Review, for example, contributed significantly to the efficiency and fairness of adjudication in New Zealand. He wrote a seminal article on the function of contract law in 2000, and he is the co-author of The Law of Torts in New Zealand, the most widely cited legal treatise in the New Zealand courts. In recent years, he has extended his reputation beyond torts into intellectual property, writing on digital copyright reform in New Zealand.
