Biographical Information

John Wilson Blunt, Professor of Chemistry, University of Canterbury, is New Zealand’s leading expert in the structure elucidation of complex natural products, particularly using the technique of NMR spectroscopy. With Professor Murray Munro, he leads a large, multidisciplinary research group centred around the isolation of biologically active natural products, primarily from marine sources and more recently from novel fungi. Most senior chemists concentrate on interpretation of spectra and do not try to understand fine details of the spectroscopic experiments that produce the data. John has an almost unique ability to do both, with the result that he has shown us how to obtain better data as well as solving difficult structural problems.
