Abstract Marine algae within calcareous shells were obtained from five sites along the New Zealand coast. Shell-boring blue-green and green algae, and the red algal Conchocelis-stage were recorded, together with small green algae growing on the surface of the shells. Some of the green algae were studied in culture, among them three new species described here as: Acrochaete endostraca sp. nov.; Eugomontia stelligera sp. nov.; and Ovillaria catenata gen. et sp. nov.

Keywords New Zealand marine algae; blue- green algae; green algae; Acrochaete endostraca sp. nov.; Eugomontia stelligera sp. nov.; Ovillaria catenata gen. et sp. nov.
