Pagrus auratus, a new combination for the species known as "snapper" in Australasian waters (Pisces: Sparidae)

Abstract Pagrus auratus (Bloch & Schneider) is redescribed on the basis of material from Australasia and Japan. Pagrus Cuvier is a senior synonym of ChrysophrysQaoy & Gaimard, ChrysophrisCuvier, and Pagrosomus Gill. Pagrus auratus (Bloch & Schneider) is a senior synonym of P. major (Temminck & Schlegel) and the species is found widely in the Indo-Pacific from New Zealand and Australia to China and Japan.
