Cafe Scientifique: A Samoan academic walks into the MET and rediscovers 1984 Te Māori

This Cafe Scientifique will be led by Leali’ifano Dr Albert L Refiti (Fasito’outa/Vaovai Samoa), Associate Professor of Art and Design at Auckland University of Technology, Co-leader and founder of the Vā Mo.

In this talk, Albert will talanoa about his six-month fellowship in 2019 at The MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) in New York City. The talk will focus on some exciting information in the archives relating to the 1984 Te Māori exhibition at The MET. Albert will explore the idea of a Moana cosmopolitanism and the emergence of a well-educated global Māori and Pacific class of scholar from that time. He will also touch on aspects of the Indigenisation project currently underway in rethinking museum exhibition designs.

The Auckland Cafe Scientifique series is brought to you by the Auckland Museum Institute, Auckland Branch of Royal Society Te Apārangi.

This talk begins promptly at 6:30pm in the downstairs event room. Wheelchair access is available directly off the venue carpark on the railway side of the building.
