'Hour of Code' online coding workshop for children

Recent MacDiarmid Institute PhD graduate, Dr Silvina Pugliese, will be running an online workshop using the coding tool, Scratch.

These days, with science becoming more and more computer-based, scientists are increasingly needing to know how to code. This is a great opportunity for kids aged 7-13 who are keen on science or show an interest in coding.

There will be a “code-along” session where children will gain familiarity with the ABC of coding (or programming) in a practical way, by coding an animation to draw geometrical patterns. No prior experience is needed and a video of the project will be provided in advance.

Please note that it is a recommended for a parent or guardian to be present during the online session. Spots are limited, but if there is sufficient interest the workshop will be run again at a later date.

Follow the 'Book now' link for more information and to register.

About the instructor

Dr Silvina Pugliese has recently completed her PhD studies in the Ultrafast Spectroscopy group at Victoria University of Wellington. Here she studied organic materials that can be used as photovoltaic cells that absorb sunlight to produce electricity. Silvina also enjoyed the coding aspect of her PhD, which allowed her to have freedom and flexibility to analyse the results from her experiments. She became very passionate about inspiring and encouraging young people to code. Silvina has experience teaching kids through Code Club NZ.
