Panel Discussion: Where Next for the Research, Science and Technology System?

The research sector is facing its biggest overhaul in 30 years.

It’s been criticised for its weak connectivity, excessive competitiveness and lack of flexibility. There are on-going debates about the nature, availability and longevity of research funding and responsiveness to Māori issues. But what should the future pathway look like? How can change best be achieved? And why should those outside the research sector care?

Two locally-based scientists, Dr Brent Clothier and Dr Mike Dodd, will give their views, with discussion to follow.

Brent is Principal Scientist at Plant and Food Research. A Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi, he is currently its president and led its submission as part of the consultation process. Mike is a senior scientist in the Farm Management Systems team at AgResearch. He was formerly on the Council of the NZ Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science and is currently on the Executive of the NZ Grassland Association.

All warmly welcome
