Sauvignon blancs that pack a punch

The New Zealand wine industry has seen incredible export growth over the past 40 years, driven largely by the success of its flagship wine, Sauvignon blanc. Marlborough wines have astounded the world for their intense passionfruit/tropical/green aromas, creating a style very different from leading European wines. Where do these aromas come from, and what is different about Marlborough? In this presentation some distinctive features of winemaking in New Zealand will be highlighted, drawing upon research undertaken within the University of Auckland Wine Science programme. Unexpected findings have drawn attention to the grape harvesting stage as determining, in a brief period of time , the style of wine that can be produced; and this applies to all white wines. A link is created to another major New Zealand tourism experience where smells abound.
