Searching for answers in the mud – unearthing the history of lakes in Aotearoa Zealand
The health of many of our lakes in Aotearoa New Zealand is deteriorating. Yet, our ability to make informed management decisions is hampered because most lakes are not monitored, and even when they are, this does tell us how or why deterioration has occurred, nor what might be done about it. Laid down year upon year, sediments preserve indicators of lake life and water quality, equivalent to centuries of monitoring. These natural archives can provide the deeper understanding we seek to properly restore the ecological vitality of our lakes.
