CREST, climate change and 'Thin Ice'
Climate change project resources for Bronze, Silver or Silver Challenge CREST awards.
Geologist Simon Lamb takes a look at what’s really happening with global warming by filming scientists at work in the Arctic, the Antarctic and around the world. The result, 'Thin Ice', is an exploration of the science behind global warming and an intimate portrait of a global community of researchers racing to understand our planet’s changing climate.
'Thin Ice' teaching and learning resource
Climate change:
“What can be done about it?”
“How can schools play a role in this?”
“How can this 'Thin Ice' video resource and the accompanying resources on the 'Thin Ice' website be best used to support effective teaching and learning in NZ schools?”
“What might this look like in our classrooms?”
This resource exemplifies several teaching units and explores the potential cross-curricular links between Science and the Social Sciences curricula.
The Guide is intended to stimulate discussion and exploration within each school, rather than to deliver a “ready to use” unit.
Some starter questions are provided to assist teachers in developing their own authentic learning programmes, making use of the 'Thin Ice' video and tapping into other resources (relevant research projects, community initiatives, whanau expertise) that are available locally.
NCEA assessment opportunities are suggested for senior units.
Connecting CREST and the Thin Ice resource
By using the investigations as outlined in the Teacher’s Guide, the “Thin Ice” video as a context for teaching and learning in the NZ Science curriculum and ordering the the CREST levels as suggested below, teachers can link the CREST awards, the 'Thin Ice' resource, and either school or NCEA assessments.
