Te aroā weteoro: Listen to the sounds in our language

Professor Gail Gillon summarises her programme of research of nearly 30 years investigating the critical importance of children’s awareness of the sound structure of their spoken language (referred to as phonological awareness/aroā weteoro) to children’s early reading and writing success. From small clinical intervention trials through to implementation of the Better Start Literacy Approach in over 1,000 classrooms across New Zealand, Professor Gillon highlights the benefits of collaborative and culturally responsive research practices to advancing the wellbeing of our tamariki.
