Find Weddell seals
Have fun learning about Weddell seals in Antarctica and helping scientists find these animals.
An American Antarctic research team needs your students help!
They are using satellite images to find Weddell seals in Antarctica.
This ongoing project needs many eyes to search the images and find the seals.
It's easy. All your students have to do is mark the images 'seals' or 'no seals'.
The scientists will ask for your help to count the seals later.
There are three parts to this (US) National Science Foundation citizen science project for your classroom.
- Go to the website and run through the short tutorial and get started searching for seals. You can create an account or just start counting. The project goes through to December 2017.
- If your students spend time with the images on the website, please have them take a VERY short online PRE and POST survey .The funders are keen to see how these activities serve as a learning tool. Your feedback as an educator is important as well and will help continue the funding for this project
- Have your students learn about these amazing polar animals and what scientists are discovering about their lives and find pictures, classroom activities and science stories about Antarctica and Weddell seals.
Take part in one, two or three, but have fun learning about Weddell seals, Antarctica and helping scientists .
2017-2018 Adélie Penguin breeding season in Antarctica!
Help scientists count Weddell Seals in Antarctica. Have your students use satellite pictures and their computer mouse to help researchers determine how many, and where these amazing creatures are. http://www.tomnod.com
Starting Nov 8, follow 10 new penguin families as they raise their chicks at Cape Royds, on Ross Island.
Adopt a penguin family, keep a field notebook, record parent foraging trips, egg hatching and chick rearing data.
Follow daily pictures as these amazing birds raise their chicks. http://www.penguinscience.com/education/royds_nestcheck.php
Combine science, art and geography. Have your students track their penguin postcards as they are mailed down to us, and then back from Antarctica. http://www.penguinscience.com/education/postcards.php
