Hot springs and early life on Earth and Mars

Hot springs are extreme environments used as analogue settings in the search for the earliest fossils on Earth and signs of past life on Mars. Extremophile microorganisms, such as primitive filamentous bacteria, become trapped in the minerals deposited in the spring-discharge channels and pools, entombing them for up to billions of years.
