TAIKURA Aotearoa Tri-Academy Indigenous Summit
This Summit is the second of three that have been agreed between the Royal Society Te Apārangi, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Australian Academy of Sciences to establish an international, Indigenous-led research agenda.

The Society will host the Summit in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, with Māori Fellows Ngā Ahurei a Te Apārangi leading development of the programme. We will welcome delegations of Fellows and other eminent scholars from Australia and Canada.
Objective
Indigenous Fellows, thought leaders, and knowledge holders from Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, and Australia will progress the kaupapa (agenda) of collaborative international Indigenous-led research.
Summit themes
- Leading and shaping international research agendas to include Indigenous knowledges and practices to solve pressing challenges
- Transforming academia for Indigenous peoples: addressing structural racism, epistemic violence, and inequities to reduce barriers for Indigenous scholars and students.
- Indigenising the academy by ensuring shared decision-making and genuine recognition of Indigenous knowledge and scholarship.

Previous Summit
The Tri-Academy Partnership on Indigenous Engagement was hosted by the Royal Society of Canada on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) nations on 5-6 November 2024.
Eight Ngā Ahurei a Te Apārangi Fellows represented Aotearoa New Zealand in Vancouver:
- Professor Gail Gillon FRSNZ
- Professor Helen Moewaka Barnes FRSNZ
- Professor Jarrod Haar FRSNZ
- Professor Carwyn Jones FRSNZ
- Professor Paul Kilmartin FRSNZ
- Professor Tahu Kukutai FRSNZ
- Professor Leonie Pihama FRSNZ
- Professor Michelle Thompson-Fawcett FRSNZ
They were accompanied by the Society's President Distinguished Professor Dame Jane Harding FRSNZ, Chief Executive Paul Atkins, and Pou Tiaki Kahu Hotere.
The Summit enabled mutually respectful dialogue based on genuine intent. Indigenous scholars reinforced the message that academies and universities need to move beyond performative inclusion of Indigenous knowledges and researchers, toward active recognition of Indigenous knowledge systems and languages, to honour “where excellence also resides.”
