Early career researchers: Strategic hui

On 28–29 August the members of the Royal Society Te Apārangi Early Career Researcher (ECR) Forum Committee came together for a two-day strategic hui in Wellington.
The first day was made up of introductions between new members, new Co-Chairs, and staff of the Society, and opportunities to share their research, goals, and aspirations for ECRs with the Committee.
The ECRs discussed operations and how their individual institutions supported ECRs.
On the second day the focus was the alignment of the Society’s long-term goals and that of the ECR Committee in providing advocacy, community, and guidance for navigating the changing science system in New Zealand.
During the discussion regarding the long-term strategy of the ECR Forum, the Committee considered its connections with the broader ECR community, the Society, and the general public, and considered forms of engagement and priorities to enhance their professional journeys.
It was important to the Committee to consider the mutual benefits for all and how to maintain connection with each component to foster a future-integrated research system.
To reach these goals, the Committee has restructured its three Subcommittees to provide opportunities for community capacity-building through training, and advocating for diversity and equity within the research landscape by writing white papers, holding webinars and workshops that inform, upskill, and connect with others, and supporting ECR representation and providing access to funding opportunities.
Restructuring of the Subcommittees will help the Society unlock its two greatest resources: people and knowledge, as outlined by Paul Atkins at the meeting.
