How to nominate

Learn how to nominate someone for the Teaching Excellence Award (STEM).

Guidelines

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Teaching Excellence Award (STEM), the nominee must:

  • be a qualified teacher working at any level from Years 1-13 or a Kura Kaupapa in New Zealand
  • be actively teaching at the time of the nomination
  • be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • have a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in New Zealand.

Criteria  

Clear evidence of excellence in: Professional teaching standards and values of Aotearoa

Exemplary and innovative teaching strategies and practice

The teacher:

  • Implements forward-thinking, research-based and culturally responsive teaching practices that inspire student engagement positively.
  • Adopts innovative and creative strategies, including digital tools and interdisciplinary methods to enhance learning experiences.
  • Uses assessment and student feedback to refine teaching approaches and maximise learning outcomes.

Cultivating student success and growth

The teacher:

  • Creates a safe, inclusive and empowering learning environment that fosters student achievement and personal growth
  • Differentiates teaching to meet diverse needs and ensures equitable access to learning opportunities.
  • Encourages the development of essential lifelong learning skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and resilience.

Promotion of global citizenship and community engagement

The teacher:

  • Embeds cultural inclusivity and global awareness into teaching practices, encouraging students to be active and responsible global citizens
  • Fosters meaningful connections with local communities
  • Actively integrates te reo Māori, tikanga, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles into teaching practice, and they this is important.

Demonstration of leadership and commitment to education

The teacher:

  • Shows leadership through mentorship, advocacy and professional collaboration, contributing to the growth of colleagues and the broader education community
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional learning and models best practices for others
  • Advocates for improvements in education within a school, local and/or national context.

These criteria have been aligned to New Zealand’s Code and Standards for the Teaching Profession.

Nominations

Nominations for the Teaching Excellence Award may be made by any person, other than the nominee. The Royal Society of New Zealand’s Academy Executive Committee reserves the right to decline any nomination.

Nominations must be loaded onto the Medals and Awards web portal. Please email the Academy (academy@royalsociety.org.nz) if you wish to submit a new nomination and you will be provided with a URL to access the web portal.

 Nominations are to include one set of the following:

  • One sentence citation of not more than 25 words, describing the achievement, which may be used for publicity purposes;
  • Nomination summary of not more than 100 words, that clearly explains their exemplary and innovative teaching to a non-specialist;
  • Nomination statement of no more than 500 words highlighting their contributions to teaching excellence in the science, technology, mathematics, pūtaiao, hangarau or pāngarau learning areas of the New Zealand curriculum.
  • Supporting documents:
    • Curriculum vitae of nominee;
    • Collated key evidence (e.g. articles or other evidence in support of their teaching excellence);
    • Two references (to be arranged by the nominator), at least one from outside the nominee’s institution. Please note that referees should be independent from the nominee.
