Each year we hold elections for positions on the Royal Society of New Zealand Council, the governing body of Royal Society Te Apārangi.

2026 Council elections

This year there are three (3) roles on Council which have elections scheduled. They are:

Chair of the Academy Executive Committee (AEC), elected by the AEC. (NB. This role is also the Deputy Chair of the Society's Council).

The election process has been completed and Professor Stephen May FRSNZ has been elected to this role from 1 July 2026 for a three-year term.*  

Councillor, appointed by the Branches.

This election is currently in process.

Councillor, elected by the Māori Electoral College.

The election process has been completed and Professor Deidre Brown FRSNZ has been elected to this role from 1 July 2026 for a three-year term.

 

* As a result of Professor Stephen May FRSNZ being elected as Chair of the AEC, a vacancy arises in the role of Deputy Chair of the AEC. Consequently, an additional election will be held as follows:

Deputy Chair of the Academy Executive Committee (AEC), elected by the AEC. 

This election is currently in process, with nominations being called.
