21–22 October 2026 - Te Whanganui-a-Tara | Wellington

Over two days, tauira (students) will investigate real-world problems with experts, and collaborate in teams to develop both critical thinking and creativity. They’ll also present their projects and compete for prizes, including for innovation, potential for impact, and communicating the value of science and technology.

Up to three projects will be selected to represent Aotearoa New Zealand at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States of America (frequently called the Olympics of science fairs!).

At the Aotearoa Science and Technology Fair, students will:

  • meet with like-minded rangatahi, local scientific leaders, and researchers

  • learn about further study, career pathways, and experiences

  • explore the latest in scientific knowledge via field trips with scientists and researchers around the city.

The Royal Society Te Apārangi has supported science fairs in New Zealand since the 1960s. The Society is now re-establishing the national fair, in collaboration with the regional fairs.

President of the Society, Distinguished Professor Dame Jane Harding DNZM FRSNZ FRACP, says the Society is proud of its long association with science fairs. Fairs provide a wonderful opportunity for our future scientists, technologists, and engineers to develop skills and become inspired.”
