2025: Dr Tara McAllister of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa will investigate how mātauranga Māori can contribute to research, science, and innovation in Aotearoa New Zealand

In her New Zealand Mana Tūāpapa Future Leader Fellowship, Dr Tara McAllister (Te Aitanga a Māhaki) will use surveys, interviews, and in-depth case studies, to analyse the impact and implementation of the New Zealand Government’s Vision Mātauranga policy. For nearly two decades, this policy has guided researchers in Aotearoa New Zealand. The policy was designed to "unlock the innovation potential of Māori knowledge, resources, and people". However, its impact remains largely unmeasured, and its full potential not yet realised.

Dr McAllister will investigate factors that hinder and facilitate realisation of the potential of the Vision Mātauranga policy. By expanding our understanding of how mātauranga Māori can be effectively used alongside science, Dr McAllister aims to show how drawing from two knowledge systems enhances the likelihood of creating innovative solutions to contemporary social, environmental, and economic problems.
