This award is bestowed for distinguished service to the humanities - kete aronui. This standing can be demonstrated by one or more of the following: a record of service to a national organisation or agency, significant contribution to public policy in the area of humanities, sustained public recognition or promotion of the humanities. It is an award that recognises contributory and dedicated service to the humanities over a sustained period.

The 2025 round is now closed. Nominations for 2026 will open in January 2026.
