NZJGG call for papers: Special Issue on Tectonic Geomorphology of Active Orogens

The New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics invites submissions for a forthcoming special issue dedicated to tectonic geomorphology of active orogens —where tectonic processes strongly influence active landscape development and associated societal risks.

This special issue aims to serve as a platform for advancing regional and global understanding of the tectonic geomorphology of active orogens, and fostering the exchange of cutting-edge research among geomorphologists and geologists worldwide.

We seek high-quality, original research articles, technical reviews, and short communications that cover any aspect of tectonic geomorphology related to active orogens, such as those that:

  • Span spatial and temporal scales from individual faults and catchments to entire mountain chains.
  • Present advances in geochronology, remote sensing, or numerical modelling.
  • Integrate field observations with innovative analytical techniques.
  • Quantify and explore relationships between uplift and erosion rates.
  • Evaluate the evolution of landscapes and related geomorphic processes under tectonic forcings.
  • Study secondary or cascading geomorphic processes and hazards including coseismic landslides, channel avulsions, and tsunami.
  • Demonstrate the relevance of tectonic geomorphology for hazard assessment, and sustainable development in seismically active mountain environments.

We particularly encourage multidisciplinary contributions that explore interconnections across tectonic boundaries, as well as collaborative studies involving networks around the world.

Important Dates

EOI deadline: 28 February 2026
Submission deadline: 31 July 2026
Expected publication: Early 2027

Please send a preliminary title, indicative author list, affiliations and a short descriptive paragraph outlining the scope of your proposed manuscript as soon as convenient to the guest editors by 28 February 2026.

Authors will be notified of the result and formally invited for full submission by 31 March 2026. The anticipated manuscript submission deadline is 31 July 2026.

Submission Guidelines

Acceptance for publication will depend on the outcome of the normal peer review process and authors meeting critical time schedules. See Author Guidelines on the journal homepage before making a formal submission to the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics if your EOI is selected.

Accepted papers will be published online individually with final citation details ahead of their inclusion in the Virtual Special Issue collection.

Please select the relevant special issue option during the submission process and indicate in your cover letter that your submission is intended for the ‘Tectonic Geomorphology of Active Orogens’ special issue.

The New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics holds an Impact Factor of 1.9 and a CiteScore of 5.9, both ranking in Q1. There are no page charges or publication fees under the traditional subscription-based publishing model. Furthermore, authors affiliated with a growing range of global institutions, may be eligible to publish your articles Open Access at no cost to yourself.
