Published 10 May 2026New Zealand Journal of Zoology Call for Papers: Special Issue on Australasian Animal Behaviour
The New Zealand Journal of Zoology invites submissions for a special issue entitled Australasian Animal Behaviour, linked to the Australasian Society for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASSAB) 2026 Conference, which will be held from 23 to 25 June 2026 at the Flinders University, South Australia.
This special issue will highlight contemporary research in animal behaviour closely aligned with the ASSAB 2026 conference. Contributions are particularly encouraged from conference presenters; however, submissions are also warmly welcomed from researchers across Australasia whose work address themes relevant to animal behaviour in the region.
Scope
The special issue welcomes research articles, reviews, perspectives and short communications spanning all areas of animal behaviour. Submissions may be based on work presented at the ASSAB 2026 conference or may relate more broadly to animal behaviour research conducted within Australasia.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, behavioural ecology, social behaviour and group dynamics, animal communication and signalling, cognition and learning, sensory ecology, neuroethology, reproductive and parental behaviour, movement and spatial ecology, predator–prey interactions, human–wildlife interactions, animal welfare and behaviour, conservation behaviour, and the impacts of environmental change on behaviour.

Expression of Intent to Submit
Authors intending to submit a manuscript to the special issue are requested to provide an expression of intent by 30 June 2026. Expressions of intent should be emailed to the Lead Guest Editor Dr Juliane Gaviraghi Mussoi (juli.gaviraghimussoi@waikato.ac.nz) and include a preliminary title, a list of potential authors, and a short descriptive paragraph outlining the scope of the proposed manuscript. Expressions of intent should be sent with the email subject line “NZJZ Special Issue”.
Submission of Full Manuscripts
Full manuscripts should be submitted via the New Zealand Journal of Zoology’s standard online submission system and prepared in accordance with the journal’s Author Guidelines. During submission, authors should indicate that their manuscript is intended for the Special Issue on Australasian Animal Behaviour.
Key Dates
The deadline for expressions of intent is 30 June 2026, and the deadline for submission of full manuscripts is 30 November 2026. Final acceptance of papers for the special issue is expected by 31 May 2027.
Open Access
Under the Transformational Agreement between the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) and Wiley, most authors affiliated with Australian and New Zealand institutions are eligible to publish their articles Open Access in the New Zealand Journal of Zoology at no cost.
