The New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics invites submissions for a forthcoming special issue dedicated to volcanic activity across the Pacific Ring of Fire—a region of intense geological activity with profound implications for both scientific understanding and societal risk management.
This special issue aims to serve as a platform for advancing regional and global understanding of volcanic systems in the Ring of Fire and fostering the exchange of cutting-edge research among volcanologists, geophysicists, and geochemists worldwide.
We seek high-quality, original research articles, technical reviews, and short communications that advance knowledge in the following areas:
- Magma genesis, evolution, and storage in subduction zone settings
- Volcanic eruption dynamics and depositional processes
- Seismic, geodetic, and geochemical monitoring of active volcanoes
- Geophysical imaging of magmatic and hydrothermal systems
- Tephrochronology, paleovolcanology, and stratigraphic correlations
- Hazard assessment, eruption forecasting, and risk mitigation strategies
- Comparative volcanology and regional synthesis studies
- Advances in remote sensing and real-time monitoring technologies
- Integration of geological, geophysical, and geochemical datasets
- Experimental studies with implications for subduction zone magmatism
We particularly encourage multidisciplinary contributions that explore interconnections across tectonic boundaries, as well as collaborative studies involving networks around the world.
Important Dates
EOI deadline: 31 August 2025
Submission deadline: 30 April 2026
Expected publication: Late 2026
Please send a preliminary title, indicative author list, affiliations and a short descriptive paragraph outlining the scope of your proposed manuscript as soon as convenient to the guest editors by 31 August 2025.
Authors will be notified of the result and formally invited for full submission by 30 September 2025. The anticipated manuscript submission deadline is 30 April 2026.
Submission Guidelines
Acceptance for publication will depend on the outcome of the normal peer review process and authors meeting critical time schedules. See Instructions for Authors on the journal homepage before making a formal submission to the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics if your EOI is selected.
Following acceptance, individual articles will be published online first with a DOI before they appear in the special issue.
Please select the relevant special issue option during the submission process and indicate in your cover letter that your submission is intended for the Volcanic Activity around the Pacific Ring of Fire.
