Ockham’s longlist announced

Congratulations to the nominees of this year’s Ockham New Zealand Book Awards longlist, which features eight Fellows and two recipients of the Charles Fleming Publishing Award!

  • Books of Mana: 180 Māori- Authored Books of Significance edited by Distinguished Professor Jacinta Ruru MNZM FRSNZ (Raukawa, Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāti Maniapoto), Professor Angela Walhalla FRSNZ (Kāi Tahu) and Jeanette Wikaira (Ngāti Pukenga, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāpuhi) (Otago University Press)
  • Garrison World: Redcoat Soldiers in New Zealand and Across the British Empire by Professor Emerita Charlotte Macdonald FRSNZ (Bridget Williams Books)
  • Groundwork: The Art and Writing of Emily Cumming Harris by Emeritus Professor Michele Leggott MNZM FRSNZ and Catherine Field-Dodgson (Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Te Aitanga a Mahaki) (Te Papa Press)
  • He Puāwai: A Natural History of New Zealand Flowers by Emeritus Professor Philip Garnock-Jones FRSNZ (Auckland University Press), recipient of the Society’s Charles Fleming Award for publishing 2023 ($7,000)
  • The Collector: Thomas Cheeseman and the Making of the Auckland Museum by Dr Andrew McKay and Dr Richard Wolfe (Massey University Press), recipient of Charles Fleming Award for publishing 2022 ($5,000)
  • 50 Years of the Waitangi Tribunal: Whakamana i te Tiriti edited by Dr Carwyn Jones FRSNZ (Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Aitanga-a-Māhaki) and Professor Maria Bargh (Te Arawa, Ngāti Awa) (Huia Publishers)
  • The Covid Response: A Scientist’s Account of New Zealand's Pandemic and What Comes Next by Professor Shaun Hendy MNZM FRSNZ (Bridget Williams Books)
  • The Welcome of Strangers: A History of Southern Māori by Professor Atholl Anderson CNZM FRSNZ (Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu) (Bridget Williams Books)

Forty-four titles have made the coveted and highly competitive longlist; ten the Awards categories of – Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction, Mary and Peter Biggs Award for Poetry, BookHub Award for Illustrated Non-Fiction; and fourteen in the General Non-Fiction Award category.

The Ockham shortlist will be announced on 4 March, with winners celebrated on 13 May at the Auckland Writers Festival.

The Society’s Charles Fleming Publishing Award is presented annually. It is worth up to $8,000 and supports the preparation of scientific books and relevant publications.
